How do you like your turnips?

I went to the farmers market on Saturday morning in search of vegetables. I chose something I've never cooked before: turnips. I also grabbed some radishes that looked so pretty!  I decided to add in some other root vegetables (sweet potatoes and parsnips) and roast them.

Here they are before:

Then I peeled some of them.

And chopped them all into small, (mostly) uniform pieces.

Then I arranged them in a single layer on my glass baking dish.

I added some olive oil, garlic cloves, pepper and salt.

I baked them at 400 degrees for 30 minutes, then stirred them up a bit and put them back in for ten more minutes.

YUM!!!

I ate some for dinner, and I'm saving the rest for tomorrow.  :)

Next time I think I'll make a bigger batch!

fridge

Today I was challenged to share photos of the inside of my fridge. I am very passionate about nutrition.  I want to be real and genuine as I try to encourage others to nourish themselves by eating real, genuine food.

So...here's a snapshot into my refrigerator for all the world to see. I want to walk my talk.

To be fair, I should mention that I recently moved in with my brother. He lives on a steady diet of pizza and ice cream. (No really. Daily. And did I mention he is thin and I've struggled with being overweight since grade school?!)

Anyway, the interaction I had with my brother while I was taking these photos was too entertaining not to share.

Me: "Hey, why is this pizza box ripped up?"
Bro: "Well, we were out of plates and I didn't wanna wash one. You can rip up a pizza box and get like five or six plates out of it!"

I. Love. My. Brother.

Also, he keeps that cardboard fast food drink carrier as a permanent fixture in the freezer to hold the shakes and malts he buys so they won't fall over.

:)

Genius.

We have no shame. Let's be real and help encourage each other.

What's in your fridge???

What Feels Good

I read this book to my preschool students the other day, and then I decided to share it with my (grown-up) yoga students as well.

I often say during my yoga classes, "Do what feels the best for you in this moment." The great thing about yoga is that it is not a competition. It is a chance to connect with yourself. An opportunity to examine and acknowledge what you are feeling- physically AND emotionally.

Maybe what you feel isn't pleasant, and you've been ignoring it. I invite you to recognize your feelings and allow yourself to have them. They are there whether you may like them or not. Don't ignore your feelings. Face them. Feel them. Embrace or let go.
It feels good to be true to yourself.
Do something today that feels good!

Enjoy this moment!

Taste the Rainbow!

Good morning!

Today I challenge you to take an honest assessment of how many fruits and veggies you are eating. Especially veggies! This may seem simple, and we've all heard it before- but truly acknowledge how you're doing in this area in order to make improvements.  It is easy to go through a day without any vegetables.  We can't get better if we ignore the truth!  We must be purposeful and take action.

Looking to provide your body with the nutrients it needs to function?
Fruits and vegetables are where it's at!

Feel free to share how you're doing! Let's help each other!  :)

Healthy

I have decided to start this blog in order to help encourage people (myself included) to develop and maintain positive, healthy habits. I know that this life is a gift, and I want to live it WELL! Who's with me?  :)
